Repair Page 6 - Drivers Side
Armed with the knowledge from replacing the passenger side corner, wheel arch and rocker panels, I was ready .... hah!
What I thought was going to be easier, turned out to be much harder.
The rocker panel didn't fit right and I thought The Bus Depot had sent me the wrong piece. But, according to the sticker, it was an outer rocker whether it fit or not. I'm not sure how you are supposed to install this piece, but in the end, I'm sure glad I was using glue because I don't know how you would weld the top of the rocker. I had to reform the angle so it would fit right and glued the top and bottom at the same time.
The wheel arch was a pain also. The rubber gasket material around the inner fender was stuck to the old arch and I couldn't get the metal and rubber apart. Eventually, with a hammer and chisel they were separated, but it left the metal stretched out of shape. This is going to take some time to get sorted out!
Top L&R: The white stuff is Metal Ready from POR-15. I used Marine Clean first to make sure the oil and dirt was gone, then Metal Ready. Be sure and use plenty of water to neutralize the the Metal Ready.
Next L&R: Next was POR-15 on all of the surfaces that will be covered up by the new sheet metal.
Next L to R: Second coat of StraightLine putty - Remember "putty is my buddy" - Charlie, the painter from American Hotrod. The lower rocker looks good. A little sanding and it will be ready for primer.
Bottom: different angle.
