Rust Repairs Page 5

Well, it's Friday night, 1/07/05 and here's the latest shots of the rear corner and rear wheel arch.  It's starting to look good.  Tomorrow I will go and buy some proper epoxy primer and high build primer and get down to some serious sanding.  I received the left rear wheel arch from Wolfsburg West yesterday so I can start on the other side this weekend.  It's not as bad and should go pretty smoothly. Plus, I have a better idea of how to cut out the old body panel and replace it.  If you haven't done business with Wolfsburg, they are the best I dealt with in 3 years of messing with VW's.

Dan and Katrina stopped by today.  It was nice seeing them.  We visited for about an hour talking about future TCB trips.  I showed them my Christmas presents from my kids, a book named Road Trip USA.  It's a travel guide for America's two lane highways.   http://www.roadtripusa.com/

Here's a few more shots from Saturday.  I bought some epoxy primer from TASCO paints in Conroe.  Nice people and are willing to help.   The lady gave me some good advice and made sure I had everything I needed.  The first three shots are after a coat epoxy primer.  This is way better than the rattle cans.  It really sticks good and looks like it will protect the metal very well.

The next three shots are of the left wheel arch removal and fit-up.  It's amazing how much rust there was hiding under some paint and Bondo.  I discovered that the wheel arches are labeled by Wolfsburg West for a 71-79 Type II, but the label on the arch itself says it's for a 73-79.  Opps!  I knew I couldn't find the arch on their website, but this is the one they told me to get.  It has an extra ridge, but since I'm replacing both sides it doesn't really matter.  I bought it WW because no one else even showed one on their website.  I won't tell if you don't.

I should get the left arch glued in tomorrow, 1/09/05.  I have some minor Bondo work to do in a few places and will be ready to shoot more primer on Sunday afternoon.  I'll update the page later this week.  Have a good week.
