Sanding......................

After about one hour of sanding on the sliding door last night, I knew there had to be a better way.  But which one?  I had read about using aircraft stripper so I was ready to buy a can after work today.

But as luck would have it, I was in a meeting at work this afternoon and our resident Hot Rod builder was there.  After the meeting I asked him about strippers and in general how to get rid of about NINE layers of paint and primer.  He said if I had plenty of money bead blasting was the best.  But since we both work for the same company, he knew better than that.  What he suggested next caught me by surprise!  He said to try using a sharp wood chisel and just scrape the paint off.  He told me about stripping a '40 Chevy in one day.

So armed with this new knowledge and a freshly sharpened wood chisel I started in on the passenger door.  WOW!  He was right.  All the way down to the factory primer in no time at all.  The photos below show about one hour of work.  It is a lot slower on areas that have had previous repairs.  I ended up using a scraper with a razor blade.  Can you believe that pile of paint came off the sliding door and passenger door?  I'll still need to do some sanding, but at least not through NINE layers.
